'My Name Is Khan' not about terrorism, says Karan Johar

Shah Rukh finds it very different from director’s previous films

Putting speculations to rest, director-producer Karan Johar said that his forthcoming film "My Name Is Khan", that has Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in main leads, has nothing to do with terrorism.

"'My Name is Khan' has nothing to do with terrorism. It is not a terrorism-based plot at all. It is a humanitarian tale about love and sacrifice," Karan told reporters after unveiling the first look of "My Name Is Khan" at JW Marriot Hotel in Mumbai on Wednesday (Dec 16).

The film's story revolves around Rizwan Khan (Shah Rukh) who suffers from Asperger syndrome, a form of autism. Rizwan falls in love with a single mother Mandira (Kajol) who lives in San Francisco. Rizwan is detained by authorities at Los Angeles International Airport, mistaking his disability for "suspicious" behaviour.

"It is about overcoming a phase, it is about triumph of the human spirit," said Karan.

Shah Rukh and Karan's last outing together "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" (2006) couldn't spell magic at the box office.

But the superstar seems to be pretty impressed with Karan's work in "My Name Is Khan" and said that the film is the ultimate evolution of the director's work.

"I have worked with Karan in his first film ('Kuch Kuch Hota Hai') and has been with him all through his journey. I think 'My Name Is Khan' is his ultimate evolution," said Shah Rukh.

"In this film, the way Karan has touched upon the scenes and sequences, it is very different from his all previous films," he added.

The film is slated to release on Feb 12 next year.

Producers’ strike, swine flu, IPL and general elections led to losses

'Blue' was one of the several big budget flops of 2009

The Hindi film industry never had it so bad. Recession, a producer-multiplex strike, and a string of duds led to one of the worst years for Bollywood. Experts say it suffered a loss of about Rs.700 crore (Rs.7 billion) in 2009.

"2009 has been a disastrous year for the Hindi film industry. We've had everything, from swine flu, cricket matches, elections to a strike against the industry this time," trade analyst Taran Adarsh told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

"And then we had major flops like 'Chandni Chowk To China', 'Aladin' and 'Kurbaan' to name a few. People have lost almost 75-100 percent for a movie. Though the actual losses cannot be accounted, it is huge and more than Rs.500-700 crore," he added.

Film critic Omar Qureshi echoed the same.

"It has been one of the bad years. Unfortunately, some of the big movies failed this year. Even Diwali, when we release the biggest movies of the year, was such a disappointment with failures in 'Blue' and 'Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna'."

The year started with not-so-happening movies like "The President Is Coming", "Bad Luck Govind", "Kaashh...Mere Hote" - none of them could ignite the box office.

It was followed by massively promoted big budgets like Warner Bros co-production - Rs. 51-crore "Chandni Chowk To China", Shah Rukh Khan's home production, the Rs.23 crore "Billu", and UTV's Rs.45 crore "Delhi 6" - all of them failed at the ticket window.

So far 120-odd films have released, but hits are few and far between. Movies that made business include low-budget ones like "Raaz - The Mystery Continues", "Dev D", "13 B", "Phoonk", "New York", "Wake Up Sid", "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani".

Big-starrer and big-budget films like "Love Aaj Kal", "Kaminey", "Wanted", "All The Best", and "De Dana Dan" too clicked at the box office.

Films like "Luck By Chance", "Firaaq", "Gulaal" and "Quick Gun Murugun" couldn't get the cash registers ringing, but received appreciation from audiences and critics alike.

The first few months were spent reeling under recession. Then came another blow in the form of the film producers-distributors' tussle with multiplexes over revenue sharing. It led to a two-month strike - from April 4 to June 5 - and witnessed a virtual drought of movies. During that period, gap fillers like "Coffee House", "99", "Suno Na" and "Detective Naani" were released.

As soon as the strike got over, IPL matches and elections started, leading to low footfalls in theatres.

Bollywood events also took a nose dive in the wake of swine flu which led to the closing of cinema halls temporarily as well as cancellation of shootings.

"The year has been a tough one because of a couple of reasons. First, for three months there were no releases which caused a dent and a lot of movies bunched up that further ate one another's revenues. Then, because of the abundance of movies, audiences declined," Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO of UTV Motion Pictures, told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

Adarsh, however, felt "the two main reasons for the industry's debacle this year have been the remuneration of actors and corporates that acquired movies at exorbitant prices, leading to doomsday."

"The costing this year was the biggest spoilsport. It was so huge that it ruined the industry. The industry was thrown to the lions because of actors' fees and it was very difficult for the producers to recover the investments," he said.

Most big-budget films received tremendous openings courtesy round the clock promotions but fell flat at the box office.

Some of them were "8X10 Tasveer", "Kal Kissne Dekha", "Kambakkht Ishq", "Luck", "Dil Bole Hadippa", "What's Your Raashee?", "Do Knot Disturb", "Blue", "Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna", "London Dreams", "Aladin" and "Kurbaan".

Bollywood now awaits the much-talked about "3 Idiots", which is releasing on Dec 25. Trade pundits hope that the Aamir Khan-starrer repeats the same success story that "Ghajini" created when it was released last year on the same day.

They also suggest some revival strategy in the new year.

Qureshi said: "We must look at reinventing scripts with a good story and a good star cast. You cannot insult the audience now and take them for granted. You have to make intelligent movies. Look at a very intelligent stupid movie 'Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani' that worked wonders."

Said Roy Kapoor, "2010 should be high on creativity and hope the production costs come down and a model is developed that is more effective than it was ever before."

'My Name Is Khan' to screen at Berlin film festival

Exclusive first-look trailer of film will air on STAR TV tonight

The latest Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol film "My Name Is Khan" has been selected to screen at the 60th annual Berlin International Film Festival, next year, according to the festival organisers.

Directed by Karan Johar and set in the US, "My Name Is Khan" will screen at one of the oldest and most respected film festivals in the world and in a country that has a growing appetite for Indian cinema.

The Berlin International Film Festival runs from Feb 11 to 21, 2010 and will host premieres from top filmmakers from dozens of countries including the world premiere of Martin Scorsese's next film "Shutter Island" starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Both Johar and Scorsese will be debuting their fourth feature films with actors Khan and DiCaprio, respectively.

"The Competition of the 60th anniversary Berlinale will be marked by a mix of styles and genres, by exciting newcomers and renowned directors," says festival director Dieter Kosslick.

"My Name Is Khan" is set to be released in theatres in India and over 40 countries including the US, Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East on Feb 12 on Valentine's Day weekend.

In North America, it will be released by Fox Searchlight Pictures which previously released "The Namesake", "Bend It Like Beckham", "Water", and "Slumdog Millionaire".

An exclusive first-look trailer for "My Name Is Khan" will air on STAR TV on Wednesday (Oct 16), at 10:00 p.m. IST and will then be beamed across 70 countries worldwide.

In the film, Shah Rukh stars as Rizvan Khan, an unconventional hero who embarks on an incredible journey across America in order to win back the love of his life. Along the way his unique brand of goodness and humanity touches the lives of many and inspires a nation.

"My Name Is Khan" reunites Shah Rukh, named by Time magazine as "the world's biggest movie star", and Kajol for the first time in eight years. They were last seen together in "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" (2001).

They have previously starred in five films together, including "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" and "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge", all of which were blockbuster hits that established the pair as Bollywood's hottest on-screen couple.

The film also marks a re-teaming of Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan, who most recently collaborated three years ago on "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" (2006).

Over the years, Karan and Shah Rukh have enjoyed an unbelievable run at the box office, working together on such hit films as "Kal Ho Naa Ho" and "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham", some of the most successful Indian films at the international box office.

Katrina prescribed complete bed rest

She spent most of Sunday in hospital

Katrina Kaif has been prescribed complete bed rest as her health becomes a cause of concern.

The actress, who recently had jaundice, is unwell once again and was seen at a suburban hospital in Mumbai yesterday (Dec 13).

Her hemoglobin level mysteriously continues to fall down despite medical treatment from the best of the doctors. This is of immense concern for her family and friends.

Katrina spent almost the whole of Sunday at the hospital undergoing medical tests, as the doctors too were worried about her deteriorating health.

Despite her frail condition, there have been certain commitments which Katrina hasn’t missed in last couple of weeks. One such commitment kept her on her toes on Friday and Saturday evening. It was the Sangeet and wedding ceremony of Salman’s Khan’s friend Krishan Narayan’s daughter.

After several public appearances over the last couple of weeks, these two hectic days proved to be the last straw and Katrina was unable to get out of bed on Sunday morning and had to visit the doctor.

Now she has been advised complete bed rest.

We wish her speedy recovery and the best of health.

Just ahead to the release of the film ‘3 Idiots’ (pictured above), reports doing the rounds are that Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor will share a long and passionate kiss in the film.

Even though Kareena, Aamir and director Raju Hirani are tight-lipped, an insider source confirmed the news.

Aamir generally does not have such kissing scenes in his films and this will be something to watch out for.

Fifteen years back Aamir had done a similar kissing sequence with Kareena’s sister Karisma Kapoor in “Raja Hindustani”, which had made much news at that time.

As for Kareena, didn’t we hear her say sometime back that she will not indulge in such scenes and skin show any more as she is going to be the daughter-in-law of the Royal Pataudi family?

"Chak De! India" director Shimit Amin is back with "Rocket Singh - Salesman Of The Year". If the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer had six original tracks, the album of his new film has only three songs. But they are definitely worth hearing.

The music of "Rocket Singh", which has Ranbir Kapoor in the lead, is by composer brothers Salim and Sulaiman Merchant and the soundtrack has eight bonus tracks from old Yash Raj Films.

The first song "Gadbadi hadbadi" is sung by composer Salim himself. It is full of punch and is an energetic number. The song has a rock feel owing to its orchestration. It gets an edge when it slows down in between and then again gains momentum.

Next is a beautiful number "Pankho ko" crooned by Benny Dayal. The song has a certain raw appeal and the lyrics are insightful and intriguing. The strumming of the guitar makes it soft and soothing to the ears. The track holds the interest of the listener right till the end.

Finally, we have the title track that is doing the rounds of TV channels. "Pocket mein rocket" has Vishal Dadlani behind the mike and is a fun song. The foot-tapping number will be liked by many.

Other than these, the album has bonus tracks like "Chak de" ("Chak De! India"), "Chhaliya" ("Tashan"), "Dance pe chance" ("Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi"), "Dil haara" ("Tashan"), "Haule haule" ("Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi"), "Jogi mahi" ("Bachna Ae Haseeno"), Khuda jaane" ("Bachna Ae Haseeno") and "Lucky boy" ("Bachna Ae Haseeno").

The album might have just three original songs but they are appealing and quite interesting.

IIFA Awards announces Canada as 2011 host

The 12th Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) will be held in Ontario, Canada, in 2011. However, organisers are yet to announce the venue for the IIFA awards in 2010.

"Before announcing the location for 2010, we are doing it for 2011. It is very unprecedented on our part. Toronto has shown us the excitement and passion to host IIFA 2011. They have a fantastic infrastructure but they wanted to take time to make sure everything is perfect for the event," Viraf Sirkari, a director of event management company Wizcraft that organises IIFA every year, told reporters in Mumbai on Dec 9.

Toronto would be the first North American city to host the IIFA.

Commenting upon the venue for IIFA Awards 2010, Sarkari said: "Very soon we will be announcing our destination for 2010. We have quite a few countries very keen and we are in tough negotiations with them."

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who is the brand ambassador of IIFA, could not attend the event as he had to be present at the Dubai International Film Festival to receive an honour.

But his message was conveyed through a pre-recorded video.

"IIFA has moved forward and has over the time brought people from different cultures and races together on a global stage. It bridges countries, nations, businesses, communities and cinemas and this is our wish too for IIFA, Toronto 2011. As the IIFA brand ambassador, I pledge my complete support to the IIFA celebration and do look for a greener IIFA 2011," he said.

In Bachchan’s absence, present at the IIFA 2010 announcement were Viveik Oberoi and Celina Jaitley.

‘Everyone is playing for money’

Evicted 'Bigg Boss' housemate Raju Srivastava would love to re-enter TV show

Comedian Raju Srivastava, the latest contestant to be evicted from reality TV show "Bigg Boss 3", says he would like Vindu Dara Singh to emerge the winner despite many controversies as he entertains the audience by providing action and drama.

"Vindu has been quite controversial and everyone says things about him but I don't know why I feel he is a good hearted person. This is one reason that I would like him to win this show," Raju told IANS over phone from Lonavala.

The 45-year-old also feels that Vindu, who is the son of veteran actor and wrestler Dara Singh, has good chances of winning the show since he does everything that people would like to see for entertainment.

"I think even public will want that Vindu is declared the winner since he is providing everything that the audience wants for entertainment - conflicts, drama, action," Raju said.

Raju, who has been a stand-up comedian and actor for 25 years, got his big break with comedy talent show "The Great Indian Laughter Challenge". He was evicted from the show on Friday (Dec 4). He was nominated along with Vindu and model Pravesh Rana.

Asked if he was prepared for the exit, Raju said: "I knew from inside that now it's my turn. I had prepared myself to go. I knew that people had had enough of comedy and non controversial behaviour. Now they want drama, fights...something that I was not providing, I think that's why I was shown the way out by the public."

"I'm out of the house after 63 days and it sure feels nice. I am happy and satisfied and have no complaints. I am quite comfortable now when I am out," he added.

However, if given a chance he would still like to step back inside the "Bigg Boss" house.

"I would love to go back, if offered. It's only if I don't have dates and I have committed my time to people that I won't go back into the house. Otherwise I'm more than game to re-enter," said the comedian, who is a great fan of "Bigg Boss" host and megastar Amitabh Bachchan.

Even though he has been voted out, Raju still doesn't want to take names of people who he thinks played dirty. "I would not like to take any one name and pinpoint a single person. Everyone is insecure inside because the situation is such," he said diplomatically.

"Everyone is playing for money and no one is god. All are making mistakes and all are doing something or the other that might not be right. So it's difficult to say who is that one person who is doing wrong things," he added.

Now that the actor-comedian is out, he wants to relax for a few days and spend quality time with his family.

"Bigg Boss" Season 3, which began Oct 4, airs on entertainment channel Colors and has various celebrities locked inside a house without any connection with the outside world.

He’ll be stepping into Mogambo’s shoes in ‘Mr. India 2’

Producer Boney Kapoor has confirmed that Salman Khan will be playing the villain’s role in “Mr. India 2”. He refused to comment any further as the script is still to be finalized.

For the first time in his career, Salman will play a villain on the lines of Amrish Puri, whose portrayal of Mogambo in “Mr. India” is iconic.

“Mr. India 2” marks Sridevi’s comeback and will also star Anil Kapoor. The film will be directed by Anees Bazmee.
Salman and Boney share a very good bond. In fact, they got along very well during the making of their film “Wanted”. So when Salman heard that Boney was planning a sequel to “Mr. India”, he expressed a desire to star in the film.

Boney told Anees about casting Salman in the film, and Anees could not think of anything better than the role of the unforgettable Mogambo.

Salman is only too happy to play a negative character in the film as it will have a completely different look.

According to the buzz, Salman will be playing a terrorist who wants to rule over India and the story will be about how Anil Kapoor, Sridevi and their gang try to free the country with the help of an invention made by Anil Kapoor.

Amitabh Bachchan, who receives a Lifetime Achievement Award at DIFF, will be joined by Abhishek

A-list stars from around the world will descend on Dubai for the sixth edition of the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) from December 9 to 16.

Headlining the celebrity list from Hollywood is Gerald Butler, the PS, I Love You and The Ugly Truth star, who will receive the Variety International Star of the Year at DIFF.

He joins a power-pack including Matt Dillon, Oscar-nominated for his performance in Crash; Christina Ricci (Penelope); Mandy Moore (Licence to Wed); Christopher Lambert (Southland Tales) and Jason Flemying (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). Broken Embraces star Lluis Homar has also confirmed attendance at DIFF 2009.

The Indian film industry will be represented by the ‘first family of the Hindi film industry’ – the Bachchans. The legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan, who receives a Lifetime Achievement Award at DIFF, will be joined by his actor-son Abhishek.

India’s new teenybopper sensation Ranbir Kapoor, the star of DIFF Indian Cinema Gala Rocket Singh – Salesman of the Year, and the film’s director Shimit Amin, who shot to fame with Chak De India, will also grace the gala red carpet this year.

Indian national award winning actor Mammootty, the hero of DIFF-film Kutty Srank (Sailor of Hearts), is another notable celebrity attendance from the Subcontinent.

Actors Boman Irani, Sameer Dattani and Minissha Lamba, who all star in Well Done Abba, Shyam Bengal’s movie that is being screened at DIFF, add to the celebrity list.

Two Indian stars Sonu Sood (Jodha Akbar) and Javed Jaffrey (Daddy Cool, Singh is King) mark their presence at DIFF 2009 through their roles in the first Emirati film, City of Life, the Arabian Nights Gala. They will be joined by Natalie Dormer (Flawless), the female lead of the Ali Mustafa film.

Lending weight to the jury list of Muhr Arab and Muhr AsiaAfrica awards are two Indian celebrities – the world-renowned painter and film director M.F. Hussain (Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities) and actress Manisha Koirala (Dil Se, Khamoshi, Bombay).

Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan will lead the Cultural Bridge programme at DIFF this year while the titan of the Arab film world, Omar Shariff, also a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at DIFF, will lead the Arab contingent of celebrities this year.

The glittering array of Arab stars this year include Hala Sarhan; Somayya Al Kashab; Mostafa Fahmy; Habib Gholoom; Samir Ghanim and Donia Ghanim; Hiam Abbas; Nelly Kareem; Elham Shaheen; Ragha Al Guedawi; Amr Waked; Rania Shawky; Sherine Adel; Khalid Al Sawi and Khalid Taja.

Amitabh Bachchan praises Abhishek, the actor and producer

Amitabh Bachchan says "Paa" was crucial for his production company AB Corp and that Abhishek has done a remarkable job as a producer by wrapping up the film within a Rs.15 crore (Rs.150 million) budget.

"Any film that a producer makes is crucial for him financially. And we completely recognise that. We can only hope that 'Paa' does well. This time Abhishek has managed all the production hassles and I am glad he has done it with a high level of maturity," Amitabh told IANS in an interview on phone from Mumbai.

"We had set out to make the film within an estimated budget of Rs.15 crore and Abhishek managed it in Rs.14.75 crore. This, in times when movie budgets are soaring to Rs.50 crore.

"I think he has done a remarkable job. I give huge credit to him for making the film without compromising on the quality or the shooting locations. God willing, it will pay off well," he said.

The real life father-son duo star in reverse roles in the film.

Amitabh says he was "quite well-behaved and obedient" on the sets unlike the "troublesome child" he was called by Abhishek who plays his father.

"Abhishek must have been fooling around when he said I was a troublesome kid. In fact, I was quite a well-behaved and obedient child (on the sets). I followed all instructions of the script and did as much mischief as the script and director Balki required from me. It was all in good fun," Amitabh said.

In "Paa", Amitabh will be seen as Auro, a 13-year-old suffering from progeria, a rare condition which causes premature ageing among children. While Abhishek plays his dad, Vidya Balan essays the role of his mother.

Amitabh, 67, had to wear over eight pieces of specially crafted clay pieces designed by international make-up artist Stephan Dupuis for his role and says he was pampered well during the entire process.

"I was quite pampered on the sets. Actually they (unit members) were more worried about the makeup as it was very tedious. I used to have a lot of problem in breathing, eating and used to feel itchy - but everyone was extremely courteous.

"I couldn't eat properly, couldn't speak and liquid supplies were given to me using straws. Everyone was quite nice to me and pampered me," he said.
But isn't he pampered much at home as well?

"Well! Of course, I am. But for 'Paa', I was really pampered like a kid," he quipped.

Asked about the experience of playing his son's son in the film, Amitabh said: "It was fine. It wasn't tough. Actually, once you decide that this is a role you have to play in a film, the father-son relationship takes a backseat.

"We just played our parts. For an actor, I think it's all about catching the right attitude of his character and that's what we have both tried to do."

Amitabh is all praise for Abhishek's acting skills.

"I think Abhishek is maturing with each film. He really suited the role he has played in 'Paa' and I must say he has done a marvellous job."

Amitabh is being lauded by film critics and industry members for his portrayal of Auro. Many have called it "awesome", "amazing" and his "best performance till date". But Amitabh said humbly: "I'd rather wait for public opinion."

After "Paa", which is releasing on Dec 4, Amitabh will be seen in Ram Gopal Varma's "Rann" and Leena Yadav's "Teen Patti".

As of now, he can be seen as a host on reality show "Bigg Boss 3", which airs on the channel Colors.

Shah Rukh will take kids to ‘Paa’ premiere

Shah Rukh Khan personally called up Amitabh Bachchan and requested his to send him five passes for the premiere of his film “Paa”, being held in Mumbai today (Dec 3).

The character of 13-year-old Auro, played by Amitabh Bachchan, is popular with the kids. In fact, SRK’s children Aryan and Suhana too can’t wait to see the film.

So Shah Rukh, who already had some passes for the premiere, requested Big B for the extra passes for his kids.

It so happened that Shah Rukh called up Big B to appreciate his role in the promos of the film and also to talk at length about his character. In the midst of conversation, Big B asked SRK if he required any extra passes to which SRK replied that he would like to have five more.

Amitabh immediately sent not five but six passes to Shah Rukh and once again requested him to come for the premiere.

Shahid-Priyanka rediscover love in Bangkok

Shahid Kapur and Priyanka Chopra, who had split recently, have reportedly got back together.

The two were in Bangkok shooting for different films last month when the patch up happened, and now they are more than happy to be back together.

Priyanka was shooting for Sajid Nadiadwala’s film “Anjana Anjani” and Shahid for Yash Raj Films’ untitled movie, directed by Parmeet Sethi.

By chance, Shahid and Priyanka ended up staying in the same hotel. While there, they bumped into each other and realised that they could not do without each other.

In fact, the first move came from Shahid’s end. He realised his mistake of dumping PC. He desperately wanted her back in his life. And, in Bangkok, he found a way.

He approached Priyanka’s friend Tammana Sharma and told her about his feelings. She played Cupid and brought the lovebirds together.

Two Grammy nominations for Rahman

Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan also nominated

Music maestro A.R. Rahman has been nominated for two Grammy awards for the film "Slumdog Millionaire".

The Mozart of Madras, as Rahman is fondly called, has been nominated in the best soundtrack for motion pictures, television or other visual media category for the film, and in the best song for motion picture, television and other visual media category for "Jai ho", said the official Grammy website.

Written by lyricist Gulzar, "Jai ho" has been sung by Sukhvinder Singh, Tanvi Shah, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Vijay Prakash and Rahman himself.

Nominated for the first time at the Grammy's, Rahman won two Oscars for "Slumdog Millionaire" and the best original score award at the 2009 Golden Globe Award.

Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan has also been nominated for a Grammy award in the best traditional world music album category.

Khan has been nominated for the album "Ancient Sounds", a joint-venture with Iraqi oud soloist Rahim Alhaj.

Other albums in the category include "Double Play", "Douga Mansa", "La Guerra No" and "Drum Music Land".

The 52th edition of the Annual Grammy Awards will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Jan 31, 2010.

‘Radio’ will test his acting prowess yet again

Composer-singer-actor Himesh Reshammiya, whose last two films bombed at the box office, has done away with his trademark cap, got rid of his nasal twang and is back to prove his acting prowess with a new look in "Radio" that releases this week.

Produced by Ravi Agrawal, the movie has been directed by Isshaan Trivedi. Also starring are Sonal Sehgal and Shehnaz Treasurywala.

"My last two films ("Aap Kaa Surroor" and "Karzzz") were super flops but my instinct says that this one will do well... my character (in the movie) is that of Vivan Shah, a radio jockey who solves people's love problems, but his own personal life has many problems," Himesh, who has completed 100 films as a composer with "Radio", told IANS.

"His wife leaves him because of compatibility issues. So he has many complexes and is a confused man. In this film, relationships and sensibilities of today have really been highlighted," he added.

The 36-year-old also spoke about his different voices in the film.

"I have sung in two different voices in the film. One in a medium octave and one in my trademark high-pitched voice," said Himesh, who has completed his 500th song with the film's track "Man ka radio".

In the film, Vivan is a successful radio jockey on a popular radio channel in Mumbai.

He has acquired everything in life but his marriage is unsuccessful. So he divorces wife Pooja (Sonal) on grounds of incompatibility.

Though he still carries a soft spot for Pooja, he soon realises that he wants to spend his life with another girl Shanaya (Shehnaz).

The movie has already recovered its investments courtesy its music that has become a hit.

"'Radio' was made at a budget of Rs.6 crore (Rs.60 million). Thankfully, the money invested in making the film was recovered through music," said Himesh.

Releasing the same week as "Radio" is Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan's "Paa" but Himesh is undeterred.

He believes he will be able to win his fans back with "Radio".

"I'm trying to improve at every stage. I hope that people like the film because it's about a common 34-year-old man. It's a character you can identify with," he said.

Director’s own humiliation in industry inspired 'Ada'

A.R. Rahman’s music highlight of Tanvir Ahmad’s film

Director Tanvir Ahmad, who is all set for the release of his film "Ada" that launches his son Ayaan, says it is not a typical Bollywood film and that his own "humiliating" experience in the industry inspired him to make it.

"'Ada' is not a typical Bollywood film. It should be a triumph of style and content over so-called meaningless candy floss Bollywood films," Tanvir, who has been in the industry for past 30 years, told IANS.

He had made two films, "Aag Aur Toofan" in 1975 and "Aakarshan" in 1988.

Asked what inspired him to make a film after 21 years, Tanvir said: "I wanted to share my pain with the people. The humiliation and deprivation I have faced all through my life just because I stood by my definition of 'good film' made me write such a story."

"Ada" is about a young guy, played by Ayaan, and how he traverses life between crime and spirituality.

Commenting upon his son's presence in the film, Tanvir said: "Launching happened by chance. When you live together with someone for years, you start knowing the person better. I monitored him for quite a long time and I thought he would be the best for the role."

Also starring Nauheed Cyrusi, Rahul Roy and Ayesha Julka, the film is set for Dec 18 release.

Ayaan says that "the film is for a pocket audience".

"This is also a dialogue-based drama. Dialogues play a very important role in the film. We have even experimented with the songs. Every turning point of the film has been explained through a song," added Ayaan who was an ad-filmmaker before making his acting debut.

"Ada" has six songs. Oscar winning composer A.R. Rahman has scored music for it and Ayaan says it will be the highlight of his debut vehicle.

"This is my first film and I don't know how people will accept me. The main attraction of the film would be Rahman's music," said Ayaan.

Producer Ravi Chopra is all set to launch his two sons in his upcoming film “Kohinoor”. The movie marks the debut of his son Abhay as the director and Kapil as an actor.

Till now, the film wasn’t able to roll as there was no heroine.

Ravi Chopra was dead sure that Priyanka Chopra would give her nod. After all she is his family friend Ashok Chopra’s daughter. But Priyanka wasn’t keen on doing the film and hence refused politely.

Post that Ravi got busy searching for a heroine. He then approached Genelia, who readily agreed to do the film.

Buzz is that Salman has promised Ravi Chopra that he will make a significant appearance in the film. Not only his appearance, he has even assured Ravi of Katrina doing a cameo in the film, which will also be quite significant.

Getting over his initial dislike of children, Sam not only emotionally bonds with them, but also helps them win a prestigious inter-school dance competition and gets their confidence back - aided by the spirited and beautiful Sonia.

Tina urges Sameer to enter the reality hunt, with the love and support from Sonia and the kids, Sameer emerges a winner and eventually becomes what he was destined to be, a superstar.

Shooting for home production kept him away

Salman Khan is upset because he couldn't attend his father's 74th birthday celebration on Nov 24. The star was busy shooting for his home production "Dabangg" at Wai in Satara district of Maharashtra.

"The whole family makes it a point to be together by hook or crook for our parents' birthdays. Anyway dad believes work comes first. But Salman and Arbaaz are very unhappy about the situation," Sohail, who was the only one to attend the bash, told IANS.

Salim Khan turned 74 on Tuesday and the Khan family planned a grand celebration, but Salman and Arbaaz couldn't return to Mumbai even for a few hours.

"I guess I got lucky. I got dad all to myself on his birthday. We were just three days into the shoot and it couldn't be stopped," he said.

"Dabangg" is Arbaaz's first film as producer and it is also the launch vehicle of actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha's daughter Sonakshi. Anurag Kashyap's brother Abhinav is directing it.

Salman is giving his best to the film - he has not only blocked bulk dates for "Dabangg" but also learnt Bhojpuri to play a corrupt cop from Uttar Pradesh.

The family is getting ready for the release of "Veer" on Jan 26 next year.

"That's a big project for us. We've worked really hard on it. After 'Dabangg' we want to start 'Partner 2'. Everyone keeps telling us 'sequels ka zamana hai'. Look how well the sequels to 'Golmaal' have done. But until we're sure that the script will take us beyond the first 'Partner', we can't go ahead."

So the entire "Partner" team is working on the sequel's storyline.

"All of us, Salman, Govinda, David Dhawan and I, have been told to work on an idea. We'll go ahead with 'Partner 2' the minute one of us cracks the screenplay. Right now 'Partner' is hot, and Salman bhai is hotter," said Sohail.

Film’s youthful music already popular

Composer Shantanu Moitra and lyricist Swanand Kirkire's latest offering "3 Idiots" (pictured left) boasts of youthful spunk and raw energy and the duo say that they had to go back to their college days for inspiration.

"Music of '3 Idiots' is inspired by my college days. I focussed on the fact that everything might change, but youth remains youth. Youngsters and their mannerisms across most generations are quite similar. So I bore that thing in mind and made the music," Moitra told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

Kirkire echoed: "I was involved in the film from the scripting stage. So all the songs in the film are organically from the script, which is a campus story. The songs required me to remember my college days. What I have written is simple and without any complications."

"When you pen lyrics for any film, you have to keep in mind the colour of that particular film, style of the film, characters etc. In this film too we kept in mind the lingo used, the philosophy of the film and so on," he added.

There are five original songs in the film, which has Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, R. Madhavan and Kareena Kapoor in lead roles. Of the songs, "Aal Izz Well" and "Zoobi Doobi" are chartbusters already.

Commenting upon the songs' popularity Moitra said: "As an artist, when you are appreciated you obviously feel very nice. But when you get that appreciation for a work where you worked without any restrictions or compromises, then that is even better."

And which song was the toughest to compose?

"It was a challenge composing 'Jaane nahin denge' because of its musical structure. It's high one moment then it suddenly goes low. So that was quite difficult," said Moitra.

Nitin Bankar (Akshay Kumar) is a personal butler, cook, driver, watchman, gardener to a wealthy female industrialist (Archana Puran Singh) in Singapore. He desperately wants to become rich and marry the love of his life, Anjali Kakkad (Katrina Kaif), who supports him financially.

Ram Mishra (Suneil Shetty), Nitin's best friend, also came to Singapore with the dream of striking it rich, but ended up a courier delivery man. He falls for Manpreet Oberoi (Sameera Reddy), but her high society parents will never approve of marriage, not unless Ram has lots and lots of money.

In the midst of all this is Harbans Chadda (Paresh Rawal), a shrewd businessman who is looking for ways to multiply his income and avoid his debtors. He decides the best way would be to marry his son off to a girl whose parents can give him a large dowry. He is introduced to Manpreet's parents at a Diwali function and is impressed by their social status. He introduces himself as a well-established businessman, impresses them and they decide to get Manpreet and Harbans' son (Chunky Pandey) married.

With several factors working against them, Nitin and Ram soon reach a dead end in their relationships. When both receive ultimatums from their girlfriends, they realise that only a life of vice can help them out of their misery. They come up with an audacious plan to kidnap someone important and demand a ransom. The kidnapping goes well and both hide at a local hotel while waiting for the ransom money. But misfortune is never far, and the kidnapping spirals out of control.

Meanwhile, Manpreet's wedding reception is being held at the same hotel that Nitin and Ram are hiding in. Soon, they are joined by a motley set of characters including a Chinese Don, a hired assassin, an ACB police inspector, a club dancer, an ambassador, a young frustrated double crossing wife, a letch, a drunken waiter and a dead body nobody wants checked into the hotel.

Aamir Khan reveals he only studied till Class 12

He might be a superstar today, but Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has no qualms in admitting that he has undergone various punishments during his education days - from getting caned to kneeling down for the whole day.

"When in school, kneeling down in front of the principal's office was a regular feature. I have also been caned a couple of times. It is strange that when you get caned, you don't realise the pain instantly, but after two seconds it shoots so badly... It's awful," Aamir told reporters in New Delhi.

"I used to be more interested in sports and hence used to always forget doing my homework. Also, poor marks used to create problems for me. I used to get scolded very often," he added.

The 44-year-old actor also revealed that he only studied till Class 12 and never had a very good college life.

"My education has only been till 12th standard because after that I got into films. Even while in college for my 11th and 12th, I used to hardly attend classes because I was always busy with dramatics.

"Because of this, I didn't have a very rocking college life. But during the shoot of '3 idiots' I lived the moments of a student's life and enjoyed the way students do," said Aamir, who used to study in Narsee Monjee College in Mumbai.

Aamir along with actors R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi was in the Capital Wednesday to promote his upcoming film "3 Idiots". Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the film is slated to hit screens Dec 25.

Talking about the film that is based on author Chetan Bhagat's bestselling novel "Five Point Someone", Aamir said it's not only for engineering students but for every student and parent in the world.

"The film is not meant only for engineering students. It applies to all students and parents, who want to see their kids successful. It questions what success is. It questions what a child really wants to do. It raises various issues important to this generation.

"However, it's told in a humorous way because that's how Rajkumar Hirani makes his films," said the actor.

Asked when he would again wield the megaphone, Aamir told IANS: "I don't know at the moment what I will make and when will that be. Let's see."

Katrina is down with jaundice

She has been advised complete bed rest

Katrina hasn’t been keeping too well for the past few days, but she ignored her condition as she was busy with the promotions of her movies. However, she reached a point where she couldn’t push herself any more.

The actress was seen entering a suburban Mumbai hospital in a pale and weak state early this week and subsequently spent almost five hours there.

Later the doctors diagnosed her with a very low haemoglobin count and jaundice.

Now she has been advised complete bed rest for next three to four weeks. But Katrina is eager to get back on her feet as soon as possible.

She has been forced to leave the promotions of “De Dhana Dhan” mid way, but she does not want to miss out on her professional commitments any further.

At the moment, Madhuri Dixit is more bothered about her son's upset tummy than playing Indira Gandhi. While the actress says the former prime minister is her idol, she maintains that she hasn't yet given her consent to filmmaker Krishna Shah for the biopic.

Speaking from her home in Colorado, Madhuri said: "The thing is, Krishna Shah approached me for the role. He's very keen that I do it. He came home, met me and showed me all the research that he had done. I was impressed by his preparations. But nothing has been finalised. We're still in negotiations."

The ever-cautious actress was last seen in Yash Raj Films lukewarmly received "Aaja Nachle".

Director Krishna Shah's enthusiasm is understandable. But so is Madhuri's guardedness. Playing Indira Gandhi won't be easy even for an actress of Madhuri's stature. And we aren't just talking about the challenge of portraying the powerful personality. The challenge would be to get the Congress' and party president Sonia Gandhi's approval.

Jagmohan Mundhra tried making a film on Sonia Gandhi but his efforts were deadlocked by the ruling regime. Two years ago, N. Chandra was to direct Manisha Koirala as Indira Gandhi in a project entitled "Indira Gandhi: A Tryst With Destiny". That too never happened.

Krishna Shah had last directed the low-budget "Hard Rock Zombies" for the American market in 1985. And his only feature-film in Hindi, "Shalimar" in 1978, had bombed at the box-office.

Madhuri, at this stage in her career when she is well-settled in life, wouldn't like to venture out into camera range unless she is absolutely sure of the project.

Says Madhuri: "I still have to decide. Mrs. Gandhi is my idol. At school, I remember impersonating her for a fancy dress competition. However, many other factors besides the bigness of the character go into making of a movie. There're many considerations to be gone through before I decide. Like I said, he (Krishna Shah) is keen. Everything has to fall into place.

"My decision would depend on where it would be shot and how long it would take to shoot the film. Also, who are the other actors in the project. The casting is very important. Because one would want large sections of the audience to see the film."

Tell Madhuri we are eager to see her back on screen and she rewards you with her trademark laughter. "There are offers. It's very sweet of people to want me back. But I can't jump into anything," she maintained.

Everyone has dual personalities in ‘Bigg Boss’, says Kambli

Evicted housemate rates experience as good and bad

Former India cricketer Vinod Kambli has been evicted out of the third season of reality show "Bigg Boss" within two weeks of his stay, but he says he still feels like a winner.

"In life, you win some, you lose some. I took this show sportingly. I made friends and stayed calm with everyone. So even though I have lost the show and I'm out of it, I feel like I am a winner, especially because I came out without plotting against anyone," Kambli told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

The childhood friend of Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar entered the show as a wildcard entry on Nov 5. He displayed a no nonsense demeanour and stayed away from backbiting, unlike other contestants on the show. Despite this, he was evicted Friday.

Kambli said: "There's a lot of plotting happening inside. All the people have dual personalities. They shed crocodile tears to make up for anything wrong they do and gain sympathy. Everyone except me was cunning there.

"I feel all the good ones (contestants) are coming out of the show and all the ones who plot against each other are in there."

Kambli was nominated along with fashion designer Rohit Verma, model Pravesh Rana, and actors Bakhtiyaar Irani, Aditi Gowitrikar as well as Claudia Ciesla.

He says his experience on the show has been both good and bad, "but mostly good".

"It was bad because of the dual personalities, backbiting and plotting. I didn't like it. Then I missed my mobile phone and my watch. I couldn't keep a tab on the time and it was very disturbing. But the good part was that I could meet so many people from different walks of life and tried to mix around with them," he said.

While locked up in "Bigg Boss" house, Kambli missed his wife Andrea the most.

"Now I'll be back to my wife's duty. I really missed her. I am so used to being pampered by her all the time. Now I'll have to make up for the lost time with her and pamper her for two to three days at least," he quipped.

"Bigg Boss" airs on entertainment channel Colors and has various celebrities locked inside a house without any connection with the outside world.

‘Paa’ is a very special movie for Vidya Balan

Vidya Balan, who is playing Amitabh Bachchan's mother in her forthcoming movie "Paa", says that now she can proudly tell everyone that the 67-year-old megastar was her first child.

"After this role, I can proudly tell my children and grandchildren that Big B was my first child. Not even in my wildest dreams had I thought of playing mother to the living legend of the industry," said Vidya Balan.

"It was a humbling experience to work with Bachchanji. This is a very special movie for me," she added.

Balan is paired with Abhishek Bachchan in "Paa", which is an emotional story of a father-son relationship. Amitabh will be seen as Abhishek's 13-year-old son Auro who is suffering from a rare disease progeria, which accelerates ageing.

Shilpa Shetty's dancing skills are well-known, and her groom-to-be Raj Kundra is no less a dancer - he surprised everyone at their Sangeet ceremony by imitating late pop legend Michael Jackson's moves.

"Raj and Shilpa gave a beautiful performance. Shilpa danced to the song 'Mere hathon mein naun naun chudiyan' and Raj did a Michael Jackson performance, which was beautiful," said Kiran Bawa, Shilpa's friend and business partner.

Shilpa is tying the knot with Raj, a London-based businessman, today (Nov 22) at Kiran's Khandala bungalow. "Instead of being a businessman Raj should have taken acting as his career," added Kiran.

Shipa's wedding is one of the most talked about in tinsel town but the Sangeet ceremony last night (Nov 21) was a small affair and attended by close friends and family.

Shilpa's sister Shamita teamed up with newcomer Jackky Bhagnani for a skit.

Jackky, son of film producer Vashu Bhagnani, also performed on the charbusters such as "Dhan te nan" from the film "Kaminey" and the title song of "Om Shanti Om". He too was impressed with Raj's dancing.

"He was superb while giving that Michael Jackson performance," said Jackky.

However, Shilpa's father, Surendra Shetty, was missing.

Explaining the absence, Shilpa's mother, Sunanda, said: "He was not well, so he couldn't attend the get together. It's sad that he couldn't come, but he will surely be there for the wedding."

Bhangra pop singer Daler Mehendi was also there and set the stage by belting out his hit numbers like "Na na na na na re" and "Bolo ta ra ra" among others. He also sang the title song of "Jhoom Barabar Jhoom".

The sangeet ceremony ended at around 2.30 a.m.

'Paa' (Music Review)

Unconventional soundtrack of an unconventional film

Singers: Shilpa Rao, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shaan and Amitabh Bachchan

"Paa" is a film with an unusual story and music maestro Ilayaraja has composed tunes that gel well with the movie's subject. Director R. Balakrishnan's film stars Amitabh Bachchan as Abhishek's son Auro, who suffers from progeria that causes premature ageing. It also stars Vidya Balan.

The album begins with "Mudhi mudhi ittefaq se". Crooned by Shilpa Rao, it has an instant connect. It is melodious but not very long. The song is currently doing the rounds on television channels and has become a hit.

"Mudhi mudhi ittefaq se" has two more versions - "Udhi udhi", an extension of the original and "Gali mudhi" that has vocals by Shaan. It is slower in pace but equally nice.

Next is "Halke se bol". It is a children's song and has a chorus behind the mike. It starts without background music and later musical arrangements are introduced. This too is short in length and is an average number.

Up next is "Hichki hichki", more of a situational number that doesn't impress too much. The fast-paced track has been sung by Sunidhi Chauhan.

It is followed by the title track "Mere paa" by Amitabh Bachchan himself. It's more of a narration in the voice of a child than a proper song. The theme song is very endearing.

Finally there is "Gumm summ gumm" sung by the composer's daughter Bavatharini with ample support from the chorus. The song has influences of jazz and is a good hear.

On the whole, the album of "Paa" is not conventional and will appeal to music buffs. But most songs will get an edge with the visuals.

The Dubai and London premieres of Amitabh Bachchan's film "Paa" have been cancelled, but the superstar says he is looking forward to the Mumbai event that will be attended by Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan.

"The London and Dubai premiere have been cancelled. Several issues have cropped up and it would not be prudent to go ahead with it under such uncertain pressures and circumstances," Amitabh posted on his blog.

"But Mumbai premiere is on at the IMAX Wadala on Dec 3 and Aamir and Shah Rukh have assured me of their presence there," he added.

Apart from promotional events of "Paa", Amitabh is also busy preparing for "Bachchan Sandhya", an event to mark the 102nd birth anniversary of his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan on Nov 28.

"The arrangements, the invitees, the program and its functions, rehearsals for the recitation and getting the family to gear up for its participation is also keeping me busy," he wrote.

Saif Ali Khan says it is "ridiculous" to think that his mother and censor board chief Sharmila Tagore gave an 'adult' rating to "Kaminey" because it starred Shahid Kapur.

"It is ridiculous to state that anyone had any personal bias against 'Kaminey'," Saif told IANS even as his own movie "Kurbaan" is about to release on Friday with an A certificate.

"I know for sure that my mother is a great authority when it comes to the censors. My own 'Kurbaan' has got an 'A' certificate and I know where she is coming from."

It was insinuated that Vishal Bharadwaj's "Kaminey" was given an A rating - restricting viewership - as its lead actor Shahid was once in a relationship with Saif's girlfriend Kareena Kapoor.

But Saif said: "Any talk of personal enmity are completely fictional. I don't even know the actual people involved who spread such rumours and frankly I don't care. Such things don't even enter my radar."

"It's really rubbish if some people feel so. 'Kurbaan' getting an 'A' certificate is hardly a fitting reply. It's a sad state of affairs when people start speculating about everything and anything. As someone who has been part of the industry for long, I don't take such things seriously," Saif told IANS.

As for "Kaminey", he said: "I think Vishal (Bharadwaj) is a wonderful filmmaker and I liked everyone's performance in the film." Saif himself came up with an award-winning act of Langda Tyagi in Bharadwaj's "Omkara".

Is it really easy to be oblivious to all talk that his mother may have shown bias?

"I hear a lot of things in the 24 hours that I have in a day. This is why I just chuck out whatever is irrelevant. I don't quite get into the 'why' and 'where' of affairs till it is absolutely warranted.

"I know one has to live with all the negativity around; after all it's human nature to gossip and speculate. Guess what? Some people think that even Elvis (Presley) is alive today. So conspiracy theories will always remain," he said.

"Kurbaan" has been given an 'A' certificate owing to its violent content and also because of erotic scenes picturised on Saif and Kareena. "Kurbaan", about global terrorism, stars Saif, Kareena and Vivek Oberoi in lead roles.

"Kaminey" also got an 'A' certificate because of its dark and violent content.

Has he ever spoken to Sharmila about the A certificates for "Kurbaan" or "Kaminey"?

"No, I don't talk about any particular movie per se but I do know of her general views and opinions when it comes to censoring a film," said Saif.

"She doesn't have any problems with anything shown on screen. But, yes, she has problems with things that are shown to children. She will ban something if there is something which is inflammatory.

"Of course, she is the right judge of things and maybe I don't know everything that she looks at in a movie during censoring. What I know for sure is that she is a good mother and follows the same caring attitude when it comes to censorship as well," said Saif.

Director Nikhil Advani is all set to start shooting his new film, “Patiala House”, next month, but he has not been able to find a key member of the cast.

It's a soundtrack that's sure to click. Shantanu Moitra, who had scored the music for Rajkumar Hirani's "Lage Raho Munnabhai", returns with "3 Idiots" and has churned out songs that are catchy, different and high on energy.

The much-awaited film, which stars Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi, has five original numbers and two remixes.

The soundtrack opens with "All Izz Well", a fun campus song that is filled with whistles in the background. Crooned by Sonu Nigam, Swanand Kirkire and Shaan, the catchy song is already doing the rounds of music channels and is sure to be a chartbuster.

The song also has a remix version that has more beats.

Next is "Zoobi doobi", the only song with a female voice. Sung by Shreya Ghoshal with ample support from Sonu Nigam, the track has a retro feel. It is a melodious number that grows on you.

"Zoobi doobi" too has a remix version with more contemporary sounds.

Then comes "Behti hawa sa tha woh" that has Shaan and Shantanu Moitra behind the mike. It has a long prelude and seems to be a situational track. The poignant, slow number has soft musical backing and is very appealing.

Up next is "Give me some sunshine" that includes dialogues by Sharman Joshi and vocals by Suraj Jagan. The song is an unplugged version and will appeal to the younger generation mainly because of the composition and the song's rebel attitude.

The album offers a very nice song in "Jaane nahin denge" sung by Sonu Nigam. It gets an edge with a sudden increase in tempo during the course of the song. There is minimal orchestration and focus on vocals. The lyrics are raw and intense.

On the whole, the album is a good mix of slow and fast-paced songs. Shantanu Moitra has scored quality music that has melody and generates lots of interest.

Bollywood debut for Indian Idol’s Chang

"Indian Idol 3" finalist Meiyung Chang (pictured left) from Dhanbad, Jharkhand, is reportedly making his big screen debut alongside Shahid Kapur.

The film, which is actor Parmeet Sethi's directorial debut, also stars Anushka Sharma and is being produced by Yash Raj Films.

Chang, as he's affectionately known in the industry, has been strictly prohibited from talking about his acting debut.

The film's composer Pritam Chakraborty, when asked if he had any hand in Chang's casting, denied it saying: "Chang is a dear friend and he is seeing Monali Thakur. But I had nothing to do with it. Nor did I have any hand in his casting in Parmeet's film. I'm only the music composer on that project."

Film presenting Bachchan as a newcomer

The idea to cast Amitabh Bachchan as Abhishek's son in "Paa" struck filmmaker R. Balakrishnan when he watched the father-son duo together and observed a high level of maturity in the latter's behaviour.

"My main aim was not to make a film on progeria. My main motive behind making 'Paa' was to reverse the roles of Amitabh and Abhishek. I decided to do something like this because once I was with both of them and I saw Abhishek behaving in a very matured manner. It was then that this idea struck me," Balakrishnan, who is known as Balki, told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

The director revealed that he got to know about progeria, the premature ageing disease, much later and used it to make his film look real instead of a fantasy fare.

"I didn't know how to implement my idea. Then a few friends introduced me to this ailment called progeria. I consulted doctors and even researched on the internet to know more about it. This gave me the idea of making my film look believable," he said.

"Paa", an emotional story of a father-son relationship, will see Amitabh playing Abhishek's 13-year-old son Auro who is suffering from progeria.

The much-awaited film is slated to release on Dec 4 and has been made under Amitabh's banner AB Corps Ltd.

Balki, who had cast Amitabh in his directorial debut "Cheeni Kum", says he was convinced that Amitabh was right for the role in "Paa" right from the inception of the idea.

"I was convinced from the very beginning that Amitabh will be best suited for this role. He has given brilliant performances before, but this is his most mind blowing performance," he said.

"For the role, he had to be completely different from his real self. For an actor to give a performance away from his personality is a very difficult thing," he added.

For the special look of Amitabh's character Auro, Balki roped in noted international make-up artist Stephan Dupuis and the arduous make-up procedure used to take more than four hours.

What is unusual about the promos of "Paa" is the fact that Amitabh has been referred to as a newcomer.

Asked about it, Balki said: "We wanted to remove every bit of Amitabh Bachchan from the character and present him as a completely new person. His distinct style, mannerisms and the way he talks...we wanted to remove all that. That was the whole purpose of this exercise."

Balki is also impressed with Abhishek and Vidya Balan, who play Amitabh's parents in the film.

"Abhishek is a very sensitive, understated and subtle actor. As an actor and as a son you need courage to play father to your father in a film. It's extremely difficult but he has done a great job," he said.

"As far as Vidya is concerned, I believe that she is the finest actress we have today. She can play mature roles as well as exhibit childish qualities in her," he said.

Marriage rumours anger Katrina

She’s ready to support police action against fake husband

Katrina Kaif is not taking rumours of her marriage with an Indore-based politician in good humour. She says people should have fun, but within limits.

"The police have already issued a statement saying that it is utter rubbish and the police are going to arrest him and serve notice. I hope they do. I agree doing it in fun is one thing but there should be a limit," Katrina told reporters in New Delhi.

"People shouldn't cross the line. I will definitely support the police' decision to penalise the person," she added.

The news came in effect after a marriage certificate approved by the Indore Municipal Corporation came to surface. It claimed that the 24-year-old is married to local Bharatiya Janata Party member Ramesh Mendola since Dec 2, 2008.

The certificate was also registered with the Indore civic body on Dec 11 that year. The local Municipal Corporation however retaliated that the certificate was fake and a complaint will be lodged with the police.

The actress was in the capital to launch Veet's Ready-To-Use Wax Strips. Katrina is the brand ambassador of the brand.

Katrina, who features in recently released hit "Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani", also insisted: "I'm confident enough to know what I am speaking."

Ajay Devgn is enjoying working in diverse genres

Doing just intense roles can get quite boring, believes Ajay Devgn who is happy to have worn a different hat in the out and out comedy "All The Best" even as he is on home ground in "London Dreams".

"It's a great feeling that at this stage of my career I am being seen in movies as diverse as 'London Dreams' and 'All The Best'. At one point of time, I was doing only intense roles," Ajay, 40, who won a National Award for "Zakhm" (1998), told IANS.

"But, believe me, if I had continued doing that till date with every film, I would have been really bored and fed up by now."

Ajay has been seen in quite a few films that required him to showcase his intense side, among them "Halla Bol", "Omkara", "Apaharan", "Gangaajal", "Deewangee", "Company" and "Takshak".

His "London Dreams" co-star Asin has said it is Ajay's "intensity quotient" that strikes one most as an actor. She also said when it comes to dramatic scenes, he just "eats up the screen".

But Ajay says humbly, "I don't really know if I eat up the screen or do anything like that in my dramatic scenes. Yes, intensity has been my forte and I take her views as a compliment. But, as I said, I am loving this phase of my career where I am able to work on diverse films."

In the pipeline are films like "Rajneeti", "Once Upon a Time in Mumbai", Priyadarshan's next film, "Atithi Tum Kab Jaaoge", "Toonpur Ka Superhero" and a sequel to "Golmaal" or "All The Best". Clearly, the man is enjoying his status as an actor who can work in diverse genres.

One can also not deny the contribution of Rohit Shetty to Ajay's career. A friend and pretty much a resident director, Rohit has now delivered three successful comedy films with the actor - "All The Best", "Golmaal Returns" and "Golmaal".

"Yes, as far as comedy is concerned, Rohit has definitely given a new dimension to my career," agrees Ajay.

"I am very comfortable with him and he is someone I really trust. I am looking forward to what he comes up with next in the 'All The Best' and 'Golmaal' sequels. We have managed to get a good team working here."

Regarding his own directorial stint though, he hasn't quite finalised a film yet.

"I am still working on my next film," says Ajay. "People do ask me a question: since I started with an action film ('Phool Aur Kaante'), would I be directing an action film next? Well, I am yet to look into it and will be making an announcement at a later stage."

Neil Nitin Mukesh, who has kept mum about his girlfriend Priyanka Bhatia so far, showed up with her for the first time at the premiere of his critically acclaimed film "Jail". He says she is an integral part of his family and that they enjoy a good comfort level.

"My parents and her parents not only know and like each other, we also visit each other's homes constantly. More than lovers, we're friends first," Neil told IANS.

"There's a comfort level in our interaction that makes us very relaxed with one another. We don't have to hide anything. We meet openly and are very proud of one another. There's no pressure for marriage on either side. When it happens, it happens. The marital status would hardly alter anything between us," he added.

Priyanka has done a course in fashion design and Neil is open to the idea of her designing his clothes for his films.

"I'd love that. But it should happen on its own. Neither Priyanka nor I want to pressurise anyone to use her skills. But if it happens, I'd be very happy to be dressed up by her," he said.

Talking about his girlfriend's reaction to "Jail", he said: "Priyanka and my mom were hysterical with grief. They weren't looking at just a character being put through a traumatic time. To them it was someone who they both love and he was in pain in front of their eyes."

Talking more about work, Neil admits that there is healthy rivalry between him and Ranbir Kapoor.

"Ranbir and I are of course competitors. But there's no negative rivalry between us. Our respective fathers (Nitin Mukesh and Rishi Kapoor) would kill us if we behaved like two brats fighting for the same roles," said Neil.

"I'm proud that Ranbir's and my grandfather (Raj Kapoor and Mukesh) were very close friends. My father and Ranbir's father adore each other. Ranbir is like my younger brother," he added

Neil's "Jail" and Ranbir's "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani" released on the same day.

"I'd want Ranbir's film to do as well as mine," Neil says. "Fortunately, 'Jail' and 'Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani' look like north and south poles."

Suniel Shetty wins award at film festival in New York

Film ‘Red Alert - The War Within’ yet to release in India

Bollywood producer-actor Suniel Shetty is elated at winning the best actor award at the South Asian International Film Festival (SAIFF) in New York for his performance in "Red Alert - The War Within" - a movie that deals with the Maoists - and says he is inspired to do better work.

"Winning an award at such a big film festival is a big high for me as an actor. Now I really want to do good films and work harder and better. The film is on Naxalites (Maoists)...," Suniel told IANS.

"I am very happy because it had also won the critics award at the Stuttgart Film Festival in Germany," he said.

Directed by Anant Mahadevan, "Red Alert - The War Within" also stars Vinod Khanna, Ashish Vidyarthi and Sameera Reddy. The film is yet to release commercially in India.

Suniel, who excels in action flicks and comedies as well, says he has always been keen to do serious cinema.

"I am always inclined to do this kind of films. My film 'Hu Tu Tu' was one of this type."

The actor started his career with the 1992 movie "Balwaan". In the last 17 years, he has featured in over 100 films and experimented with different genres, but a few could do good business at the box office and none of them could get him any awards except Dharmesh Darshan's "Dhadkan" in 2000.

He won the Filmfare Award for the best villain for the triangular love story that also starred Akshay Kumar and Shilpa Shetty.

Asked if the Indian film industry has failed to recognise his talent, he said: "I have no complaints about the Indian film industry because if it had not recognised my talent, it would have been impossible for me to sustain for so long."

Suniel's next is "De Dana Dan", which is set to release Nov 27. Directed by Priyadarshan, the comedy also stars Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Paresh Rawal, Neha Dhupia and Sameera Reddy.

Talking about the film, he said: "It's an out-and-out comedy. In the film, we had to shoot under water which was again an experience of its kind."

'De Dana Dan' (Music Review)

There's been an overdose of Pritam's works this year with "De Dana Dan" being the 11th film he has composed music for. While most of the scores he's given in 2009 have been appreciated, the music of "De Dana Dan" is not one of his best works.

Another comedy from Priyadarshan, "De Dana Dan" stars Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Suniel Shetty and Neha Dhupia.

The album has a heard-before feel and doesn't create too much interest. It contains six originals and an equal number of remixes.

The opening track "Rishte naate" is a melodious romantic track crooned by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Suzzane Demello. The breezy, soft-paced song is nice but not brilliant.

It also has a remix version that offers more beats.

Next in line is "Paisa", which is already being heard on music channels. The song with a Punjabi touch has RDB - The Punjabi pop band -, Manak-E and Selina behind the mike. The song is catchy but in terms of composition and singing, the track has a definite heard-before feeling. But it could be a hit at the DJ consoles.

This one too has a remix version that is faster in pace.

"Gale lag ja" is another soft, mushy number that generates interest. And it has been sung really well by Javed Ali and Banjyotsana.

Then we have "Baamulaiza" sung by Mika Singh, Dominique Cerejo and Style Bhai. The song gives a complete feel of a carnival and has mostly English lyrics. The track is lively and catchy but offers nothing fresh.

It has two remixed versions, one a reggae mix and the other a normal remix - efforts to make it popular on the dance floor.

Up next is Sunidhi Chauhan singing "Hotty naughty" that has traces of hip hop. The fast-paced song has poor lyrics and composition - a complete disappointment.

This song too has a remix version.

Finally there is the title track "De Dana Dan", which is energetic and pacy and crooned by Ad Boys. The track is dominated by percussion and is an average number.

On the whole, the album offers nothing extraordinary. For once, Pritam hasn't really cast a spell on listeners.

Her glamorous persona still has men gawking. Bollywood actress Rekha, who turns 55 on Oct 10, metamorphosed into a diva from the overweight young actress she once was and inspires the current league of actresses.

"She is a dreamer... she lives in her own world. She imagines a lot of things that suit her psyche as an actor. She is a very genuine, warm and a very sensitive person... And no denying the fact a very good learner. It has been an amazing experience to work with her; she is a perfect actress," Muzaffar Ali told IANS.

"Post-'Umrao Jaan', she has kind of withdrawn herself... perhaps because that role was a very cerebral, cultural and classical one that raised her to a pedestal that cannot be surpassed ever... not by her or by anyone else," he added.

Daughter of southern star Gemini Ganesan, Rekha bagged overnight success with her debut vehicle "Sawan Bhadon" (1970) and gradually became India's sex symbol. What catapulted her to the Bollywood zenith was Muzaffar Ali's period drama "Umrao Jaan" (1981) that even won her a National Award.

Having acted in more than 150 films, she made her presence felt with her versatility and different avatars in films like "Do Anjaane" (1976), "Ghar" (1978), "Muqaddar Ka Sikander" (1978), "Khubsoorat" (1980), "Silsila" (1981), "Baseraa" (1981), "Utsav" (1984), "Khoon Bhari Maang" (1988), "Ijaazat" (1988), "Kama Sutra" (1996) and "Zubeidaa" (2001) to name a few.

Last seen in a cameo for Shah Rukh Khan-starrer "Om Shanti Om" (2007), industry insiders have often spoken of Rekha as a "capable, disciplined actress with immense range, ability and mastery of precise detail".

"Rekha is nearest to the parallel of Swedish actress Greta Garbo... they both came from poor backgrounds and climbed great heights... As an artiste she was first noticed in 'Ghar' and after that she was no more termed as only a voluptuous artiste in Hindi cinema because then came films like 'Khubsoorat' and 'Umrao Jaan' that set her apart," said noted film historian Gautam Kaul.

"She is enigmatic... because she is hard to get. She only moves in a small circle of senior film people and she shuns the media. That's also because she is a tragic figure with failed relationships... none of which succeeded, so she has withdrawn into herself. The only place she is now noticed is award functions, which are also picked and chosen. But she still doesn't give any interviews," he added.

All said and done, Rekha is also known for her lifestyle and glossy image.

"Rekha is a diva... In fact, the term diva (in India) was coined for Rekha. The way she has metamorphosed herself from what she was when she came into the industry is mind blowing... She has worked on her language, body, diction, everything and apart from that she's a fantastic actress," said renowned film critic Omar Qureshi.

"There was a special 'Rekha Diet' compiled by Chunky Pande's mother, Dr. Snehlata Pandey. Her looks and style are copied throughout India and she even has her book (on yoga and exercises) called 'Rekha's Mind and Body Temple' (1983). She has remained a mystery and what keeps her a legend is that how she has kept it intact so beautifully. She is a complete Jane Fonda," he added.

She still inspires the current league of actresses.

"She is a very good actress... I enjoy seeing her movies. She is very humane and caring. I wish her blessings and good wishes for her birthday," said Gul Panag.

Item girl Rakhi Sawant feels that Rekha's wax statue should also be made.

"There is no one in the industry to compare with Rekhaji as a beauty and as a performer... she is so good. For me, she is the perfect style icon. 'Jitna chamak unke face par hai, kisi ke chehre par nahin' (the glow on her face is incomparable).

"She has a perfect nose, pretty eyes and the best part is that she does her make-up on her own. She is in perfect shape. I just love her and adore her. I think she should have a wax statue at Madame Tussaud's. I wish her a very Happy Birthday," Rakhi said.

Shilpa met millionaire Kundra, 34, shortly after she found fame in Britain by winning the international reality series "Celebrity Big Brother" two years ago. Now she is marrying him on Nov 22 at a private ceremony to be attended by close friends and family.

Kundra was already separated when he met Shilpa, but his estranged wife Kavita publicly blamed the actress for the break-up of the marriage. However, Shilpa was adamant she would date him only after he was officially separated.

"To be honest, I think I was in love with Raj from day one but I was in denial. I made it clear to him that our relationship could go no further than friendship until he actually had his divorce," the Daily Mail online had once quoted her as saying.

"It actually made me feel physically ill. To be called a marriage-breaker was the worst thing possible. It brought such shame on to my parents, and I felt so bad for their sake," she added.

Rajkumar Santoshi has changed lanes. Known for intense, hard-hitting movies [with the sole exception of ANDAZ APNA APNA], Santoshi now attempts a rom-com in AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI, his new endeavour. That's something we all know by now, right?

But not many of us know that Santoshi is equally at home handling a comedy. And AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI proves it.

If you're attempting a rom-com, you need to get a few things right...
One, the romance should be livewire. Ditto for the chemistry between the on-screen pair.
Two, the film should make you laugh. As simple as that!

In AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI, the romantic moments are endearing. Most importantly, the on-screen chemistry is electrifying. Ranbir and Katrina look great together!

I've often said that comedy is serious business and the audience has moved over from banana peel humour in movies. The comedy in AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI - though it borders on absurdity - is funny in most parts. Sure, there're times when you feel that the humour looks forced [climax fight especially], but you don't grudge it since Santoshi's intentions are crystal clear from Scene 1 onwards: Entertainment ke liye kuch bhi karega.

Another factor that goes in its favour is Pritam's music, who belts out a couple of lilting tracks.

On the flip side, the film could've done with a fresh plotline. When you talk of 'Ghazab Kahani', it has to be ghazab by all means. It shouldn't fall prey to predictability, but the second hour succumbs to mediocrity occasionally.

Yet, despite the blemishes, AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI is a full-on entertainer. One thing is for sure, you'd fall in prem with Prem and his antics. An ideal date movie that should connect with the youth.

Prem's [Ranbir Kapoor] fundas in life were very simple - be happy, make others happy. A case of mistaken identity leads Prem to almost kidnap Jenny [Katrina Kaif], who was brought up by indifferent and uncaring foster parents.

Prem falls in love with Jenny, but realizes gradually that Jenny is in love with someone else [Upen Patel], the son of a conniving politician [Govind Namdeo]. Prem decides to sacrifice his love and get the lovers married.

In the first sequence, Santoshi makes it loud and clear that AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI is very unlike his previous ventures; this one harbours on illogical situations. Right from the time Ranbir sets his eyes on Katrina [the yellow outfit episode], the film is a roller coaster ride.

A few sequences entertain you thoroughly. Sample these: Katrina slaps Ranbir when he stammers as well. She feels he's imitating her; Ranbir's sequence in the church; Salman Khan's cameo; the love-hate relationship that Ranbir and his father [Darshan Jariwala] share; the sequence at the party; the interval point when Ranbir falls on the ground literally... the first hour of the film simply rocks!

But the second hour makes you a little grumpy. The third angle of the triangle [Upen Patel] isn't convincing, while his father's [Govind Namdeo] track is beaten to death. Even the villain [Zakir Hussain] is a sore point.

Watching the second hour makes you feel that the film may've had a longer running time and in order to bring down the length, a number of scenes must've been chopped off, which, in turn, must've resulted in continuity lapses. For instance, Katrina's kidnap by the villains looks too sudden. When and how did it occur?

Yet, there're two sequences in this hour which are remarkable and which should bring the house down. One, when Ranbir wears Katrina's top to hide her presence in the house and the climax fight, when Katrina mistakenly bangs Ranbir a couple of times.

Directorially, Santoshi proves the naysayers wrong and bounces back with a film that the youth would relate to. You can't write off the maker and AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI proves it. Pritam's music has 'Hit' written all over it. S. Thiru's cinematography is first-rate.

Ranbir Kapoor is the next big thing and AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI proves it yet again. He's charismatic, emotes exceptionally well and tickles your funny bone without making faces. It's a fantastic performance all the way. Katrina Kaif continues to surprise. She surprised you in NEW YORK. She surprises you again in this film. She scores in both emotional and light scenes. Also, Ranbir and Katrina make a wonderful on-screen couple.

Darshan Jariwala is exceptional. Smita Jaykar is very good. Upen Patel is decent. Govind Namdeo is getting typecast. Zakir Hussain is fair. Navneet Nishan is alright.

On the whole, AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI entertains majorly. At the box-office, the fantastic pre-release campaign coupled with the terrific chemistry between Ranbir and Katrina, excellent music by Pritam and tremendous appeal for youth should ensure a big start for the film at the ticket window. The business prospects seem excellent, thus ensuring handsome returns for its investors.

Arjun (Ajay) and Manu (Salman) are childhood buddies living in a Punjab village. Arjun passionately loves music and dreams of becoming a musical sensation like Michael Jackson and perform at London’s Wembley Stadium but his family hates music as it was the reason for his grand father’s death. But as after his father’s death, Arjun’s uncle (Om Puri) brings him along with him to London, he runs away to pursue his dream. Mannu grows up in the village turning out to be a good for nothing bloke who makes money by playing his band at marriage ceremonies. Meanwhile Arjun chases his dream and forms a band with two Pakistani brothers (VJ’s Aditya and Ranvijay) and Priya (Asin). When he realizes he is getting attracted to Priya he decides to hide his feelings and focus on music and only reveal to them when he fulfills his dream. He gets Mannu to London to join his band. But that he realizes turns out to be his biggest mistake. The naturally talented Mannu scores over Arjun in every department unintentionally and goes on to become a bigger sensation that a dedicated and hardworking Arjun. Jealousy starts creeping in for Arjun but the final nail in the coffin comes when he sees even Priya falling in love with Mannu. What sinister plan Arjun throws on an unsuspecting Mannu to destroy his musical career and what it all leads to forms the rest of the film.

Vipul Amrutlal Shah has delivered his technically best product till date with London Dreams. But apart from the technique its high on emotions as well. Vipul gives apt time for character development for each of his main protagonists. Devoid of unnecessary melodrama he captures the emotional moments with aplomb. Sejal Shah’s camerawork is of international standards. The night scenes are superbly lit.

Amongst the flaws, the climax is overstretched and the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music not really up to the mark, especially the climax concert numbers. The song that comes after everything is over is too slow and a rousing number would have made for an apt grand finale.

Ajay is excellent in his part and one can see the best villain awards coming his way at the awards for this year. Salman seems to be enjoying himself and is extremely likeable. Though Asin is most of the time relegated to the background she puts up a nice act. Her chemistry with Salman works. Popular VJs Aditya and Ranvijay of Roadies fame make a good debut. Om Puri in a small part impresses as usual.

This film was originally planned over a decade back to be made by Rajkumar Santoshi with SRK and Aamir. Well, it may not star them now but makes for an excellent musical journey worth an experience in the big cinema hall.

More details on Samsung’s OLED netbook display – Video

You know that 7 inch AMOLED display Samsung was showing off in some netbook prototypes yesterday? It looks like it’s set to go into production in early 2010 with the goal of fitting it into netbooks, eBook readers and other devices like VoIP phones.

Netbooked got a chance to check the displays out in person and shot a short video which you can check out after the break. You can also find more photos at Netbooked.

The display has a 1024 x 600 pixel resolution, a 100,000:1 contrast ratio, and 300cd/m2 brightness.

Nokia’s First TD-SCDMA Phone For China Mobile

Nokia might be looking at its smartphone share in the US being eaten up like nobody’s business no thanks to its rivals from a variety of manufacturers who have come up with a much cleaner user interface and seamless ease-of-use. Still, that doesn’t mean this cellphone manufacturing giant is going to give up that easily elsewhere in the world. The Finnish company aims to strengthen its grip in the China market by announcing its first device for TD-SCDMA – China’s domestic 3G standard, simply known as the Nokia 6788. The Nokia 6788 is the result of close collaboration between Nokia and the world’s largest mobile phone operator, China Mobile. After all, in a country where there is more than a billion people will definitely offer an extremely lucrative potential market, no?

According to Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CEO of Nokia: “Nokia sees TD-SCDMA as being central to the successful evolution of 3G in China, and so is fully committed to this 3G standard. With a wide range of integrated China Mobile applications, the Nokia 6788 marks a new level of collaboration with China Mobile and offers enriched experiences to China’s 3G users. Lenovo’s IdeaPad Y550P: The Most Powerful Core i7 Notebook?

Lenovo announced three new Windows 7 ($75.99)-powered IdeaPad laptops today – the U150, U550, and Y550P. The first two emphasize portability and long life, but the Y550P’s focus is power. Sporting Intel’s new Core i7 processor (which includes Turbo Boost technology), up to 8GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce 240M graphics card, the Y550P is looking to capture the hearts of gamers and multimedia mavens. Lenovo claims that this is the most powerful laptop with Core i7 inside.

The 15.6-inch system incorporates a 1366×768 HD display and the option for including a Blu-ray drive. Though we often find laptop speakers lacking, the promise of an integrated sub-woofer is intriguing, as is the automatic theater quality audio/video optimization.

The 6.1 pound, 15.2 x 10.0 x 1.5 inch system is similar in style to the aesthetically impressive IdeaPad Y450. The keyboard and touchpad look unchanged, though there is one addition to the deck: a touch-sensitive slide bar. SlideNav is designed to help users navigate programs, documents and shortcuts, unobtrusively blending into the deck when not in use. Lenovo has often emphasized good design in their consumer laptops, and we’re happy to see this trend continue.

The Y550P will come with Windows 7 Home Premium which also includes the Lenovo Enhanced Experience. Lenovo and Microsoft worked together to bring a set of features, tools and optimizations to Windows 7 that promises to make selected IdeaPad laptops boot and shut down faster, make maintenance easy, and deliver richer entertainment and graphics. Faster boot times are always welcome, and we’re definitely eager to hear the claimed difference in audio.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y550P will likely retail for around $1399 and should be available to consumers in mid-November.

Lenovo IdeaPad U150 Gets Official Pricing And Release Date

As expected, Lenovo introduced the IdeaPad U150 thin and light laptop during a global web conference event today. There aren’t a ton of suprises, seeing as the laptop is already available in Japan. But here’s one thing we didn’t know until today: The Ideapad U150 will have a starting price of $585 in the US.

The laptop has an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display and supports up to 8GB of RAM. It weighs just under 3 pounds, and features a Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics and an HDMI output.One interesting note is that Lenovo says it will feature a Core 2 Duo processor. I’ve seen the Japanese version described as having an Intel SU2300 processor, which I was pretty sure was a dual core Celeron processor. So it’s not clear whether the IdeaPad U150 will be getting a new CPU, or if the SU2300 is actually a Core 2 Duo processor.

The IdeaPad U150 should be available in mid-November.

In other news, Lenovo announced that the Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 line of Intel Atom-powered netbooks will be available with a range of colorful new lids. You can check out a picture after the break.

‘Dance Premier League’ giving her the chance

Even though we love her, Rani Mukerji no longer seems the actress who can assure hits at the box office.

After her recent film “Dil Bole Hadippa” failed to create any excitement, despite Rani putting her heart and soul into it, the actress seems to have accepted that time is not on her side anymore. Newer stars have taken over Bollywood and are stronger at the box office.

Rani is now doing all that she never did. Earlier she was not very particular about her wardrobe and often repeated outfits at public events. However, of late we have seen her transforming into her stylish best and looking more stunning than she ever has.

Rani also did not pay much attention to her rapport with the media in past; and that too is changing now.

Professionally, her last chance is the “Dance Premier League” reality show which she is judging (pictured above). Rani is going all out to make it right so it helps her climb the popularity charts again and win her fans back.

Rani is taking all the right steps - from meeting up with buddy Shah Rukh and getting tips from him for her TV debut, to reaching the sets for her show on time.

Rani arrives at the RK Studios in Chembur at 10am and goes about getting ready for her shot, which is at 4pm. She never throws any tantrums and is patient about everything. No wonder, everyone at DPL is bowled over.

Now that popularity just has to make its way out of the studio. We are waiting for the return of Rani.

Rahul Mahajan (pictured left), son of slain Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pramod Mahajan, has surpassed the popularity of item girl Rakhi Sawant as he has received 40 percent more entries than her for his televised 'swayamvar'.

Mahajan, who has decided to find his life partner through NDTV Imagine's reality show "Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jayega", has received 16,755 entries via phone, email and SMS, said a press release from the channel.

"I am happy with the response and I'm looking forward to finding my life partner with whom I can begin a new journey," said Rahul.

From professionals like doctors and engineers to students and artists, women from all walks of life within the age-group of 22 to 26 years have sent in their profiles with the hope to win this 34-year-old's heart. The entries closed on Oct 21.

Delhi girls have topped the list with 5,063 entries followed by Mumbai, from where 4,188 entries have been registered.

Entries from cities like Kolkata, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Nagpur and Ahmedabad poured in. NRI girls from Dubai, London and US too sent in their profiles.

The show, likely to go on air in November, will search for an ideal bride for Rahul. This will be done with a nationwide audition process followed by multi-city meetings and interviews with shortlisted participants.

‘All The Best’ (Movie Review)

A comedy that doesn't leave you blue in the face

In his first really decent and meaty role since "Munnabhai", Dutt gets into the satirical groove effortlessly and fluently playing a visiting Bade Bhaiyya from abroad whom his kid brother Fardeen Khan (tolerably befuddled) must fool into believing he's married and decent.

The guys in Rohit Shetty's comedies are anything but decent. Rascals and rogues of the first order, Devgn and Khan are splendidly supported by a sparkling cast of comic actors ranging from Asrani to Johnny Lever to the wonderful Ashwini Kalsekar (remember how cheesy and charming she was in Rohit Shetty's "Gol Maal Returns?") to Sanjay Mishra (as a zonked out wannabe householder who says 'Just chill' as though his tongue had just been through a sugarcane-juice machine).

The screenplay (Robin Bhatt) juices the material for all it's worth. The constant flow of cheesy-breezy dialogues is littered with high-school humour but blessedly no vulgarity. This is one comedy you could take your mom to see without once walloping a wince into the wanton soup.

The burlesque is fast-paced though surprisingly restrained and has room galore for PJs. The one-liners are so silly and graffiti-like in their basic humour, you can't but titter at the trivia wrapped in gloss that makes welcome room for Pritam's pacy music without getting in the way of the one-liners.

So ok. This one doesn't leave you... er blue in the face. The comedy is purely situational and the style purely 'Rohit Shetty'. That means a bit of slapstick, a bit of that rapidly-moving tongue in the cheek, and a lot of Ajay Devgn.

And if you add Sanjay Dutt to the bubby bouncy comic brew... man, you've got a show that's on the road from the word go. This time the setting, if you must know, is Goa.

Shetty doesn't use the touristic spot as a character. You suspect he places his colony of characters in the Goan location so they could all be camera-framed into a streamlined stampede.

There are only three female characters in the show, the rest are all guys playing conmen, goons, gangsters, wheeler dealers, warriors and worriers all of whom display an exemplary comic strength.

Sanjay Dutt gets it right after a long time. He has a lot of fun doing his part and he lets us share his enjoyment. Ajay Devgn's comic timing has gotten rapidly dead-on under Shetty's tutelage. He gives Dutt tit for tat, and then some more.

Not all the material is uniformly amusing. Towards the finishing line you do begin to wonder how much longer it would take this wonky wacky world of wispy and reparable wickedness to set itself right.

"Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani", which stars Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, is music director Pritam Chakraborty's eighth release this year and he has once again done a great job by composing music that is energetic, contemporary and pleasing.

"Aa jao meri tamanna" sung by Javed Ali is a breezy song. The combination of high and low pitch vocals gives this romantic number an edge. In short, it is sweet and hummable.

The song also has a remixed version, which is faster in pace. But the original is much better.

"Follow me" is a hip-hop number and has Hard Kaur behind the mike. It has a contemporary feel and Hard Kaur excels in what she does best - rap.

Next in line is "Main tera dhadkan teri", which is a power-packed song with vocals by three talented singers - KK, Sunidhi Chauhan and Hard Kaur. The energetic track has good musical backing.

The remixed version of "Main tera dhadkan teri" has nothing extraordinary to offer.

"Oh my god" sung by Mika Singh and Sunidhi doesn't impress much. It starts with the typical wedding music, but lacks punch and good lyrics.

Up next is "Prem ki naiyya", a confluence of rustic vocals and western music that has been crooned by Neeraj Shridhar and Suzzane D'mello. But this song does get a tad boring.

The remixed version too doesn't have anything new to offer.

"Tera hone laga hoon", another mushy offering by Pritam, is a song already popular on the radio and music channels. Sung by Atif Aslam and Alisha Chinoy, it starts with English lyrics and then graduates to Hindi. It's a beautiful, soothing love ballad that is well sung.

The remixed version has more beats and increased pace.

Finally there is the best song of the album - "Tu jaana na". It has three versions apart from the original, which starts with a chorus. It's a soft song by Atif Aslam that instantly strikes a chord with the listener. The musical backing is neither too low nor too loud. The vocals are a plus for the song.

Next is the remixed version of the song, which is disappointing. The beats in the song seem to be forced and not properly placed.

Then we have the reprise version sung by Soham, Rana Mazumdar and Ashish Pandit. It is quite similar to the original song; only that the singers are different. Nonetheless, a nice version.

Finally there is the unplugged version, which is the best. Kailash Kher's voice takes the song to another level altogether. One can listen to this song again and again for its soul-stirring effect.

On the whole, the music of "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani" is a must hear and has the potential to be on top of the charts.

Salim-Sulaiman have slowly emerged as creators of amazing and impressive music. With their next album for the movie "Kurbaan", which stars Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Vivek Oberoi, they have proved their prowess yet again.

The album boasts of songs that grow on you and are not typical.

There are five originals and one remix in the album.

"Ali Maula", brilliantly sung by Salim Merchant himself, has a dark, edgy beginning. The slow-paced devotional number has minimal musical arrangements and makes an impact.

The track also has a remixed version, which is faster and introduces more orchestration.

Up next is "Dua" - it exudes freshness and gets an edge with the vocals. Crooned by two very talented singers - Sukhwinder Singh and Kailash Kher - the song begins with English lyrics rendered by Marianne D'Cruz Aiman. It has strong musical backing and a qawwali touch, which makes it interesting.

Then comes the title track "Kurbaan hua" that has Vishal Dadlani behind the mike. It reminds of "Nazara hai" from the film "8 x 10 Tasveer". Nonetheless, "Kurbaan hua" is a power-packed rock number that does create an impact.

Next is "Rasiya", which is the best song of the album. With the deep and extremely engaging voice of Shruti Pathak, the sensual number instantly strikes a chord with the listener. A semi-classical song like this has come in the forefront after a long time.

Finally there is a pleasing romantic number "Shukran allah" sung by Sonu Niigaam, Shreya Ghoshal and Salim Merchant. Its mellow arrangements make it a soothing and likeable song.

On the whole, the album is worth checking out. Salim-Sulaiman have done a great job yet again.

Kamaal R. Khan thrown out of ‘Bigg Boss 3’

His rude behaviour upset everyone

Kamaal R. Khan’s rude behaviour towards the housemates forced Bigg Boss to take a harsh step – the “Deshdrohi” actor was ordered to pack his bags and leave the reality show “Bigg Boss 3”.

From the time Kamaal entered the house, he had problems with each and everyone in the house. He never worked and helped the other housemates. He just boasted about his high standard of living and made others realise how small they were in front of him.

This behavior led to fist-fights yesterday. After the completion of their performances as part of the daily task, Kamaal gave very few points to Rohit Verma and Shamita Shetty.

Later at the dinner table when Rohit and Shamita were discussing the points, Rohit indirectly hinted that Kamaal gave points as charity. Kamaal got enraged and threw a bottle at Rohit, who managed to escape but Shamita got hurt.

Post that, Kamaal behaved rudely with Raju Shrivastav and they even came to blows. At that time Bigg Boss gave him a stern warning.

Later in the night, the housemates decided that Bigg Boss should either throw Kamaal out of the house or else they would stage a walk out.

Bigg Boss then called everyone into the living room and sternly told Kamaal to pack his bags and leave.

This is, in fact, the first time that a participant has been thrown out of the house by Bigg Boss himself.
